Coding Grace May 2020 Newsletter

Keeping safe, well and connected during social/self-isolation
Summer is officially here, and it's longer days with hopefully a good mix of rain and sunshine that we can head out but also not feel too bad being at home during lockdown.
I've been working on a few things the past month, it was chance to skill up and learn new things. ๐
- Finishing off the code for my ongoing Maker project (Raspberry Pi, Adafruit's mini thermal printer, Circuit Python): Print Your Own Adventure Game
- Digital drawing, inking and colouring a cartoon character from scratch with Procreate on my iPad
- Making a 20 second countdown time with Adafruit's Circuit Playground Express and Circuit Python
- Making my own zine to accompany my above mentioned "Print Your Own Adventure Game". ๐
I'm still making fabric masks on and off, and getting better using the sewing machine.

To all the folks on the frontline from various industries keeping the country ticking on, they deserve our hugest support and recognition. ๐๐๐
BTW, don't forget the volunteer groups who from took initiative from the first official announcement from the government about social isolation and call to action like Open Source Ventilator Project, the Covid-19 Cloth Face Masks for All Ireland Facebook group, and the 3D Printing Ireland Facebook group who are printing face shields for frontline health workers. If you have a 3D printer or know of folks/organisations who can get involved, do join in the various volunteer efforts. ๐ช๐ผ

PyCon Online is happening right now. Talks, tutorials from the last couple of weeks are up. Things to watch out for:
- Hatchery: Beginners Data Workshop for Minorities (This event will be held remotely on May 9th and May 16th, 2020!) - Register here
- Hatchery: Mentored Sprints (This event will be held remotely on May 17th, 2020!) - Register here

๐ Your Support ๐
๐คWe are still interested in finding out what you are interesting in learning, especially now that we are indoors and would be a great opportunity to learn new skills.
๐คฒWe mentioned this in our newsletter last month. We want to try and make Coding Grace sustainable, our huge expense is our accountant each year. So we are trying out Open Collective and we are open to donations from individuals and corporates. We are not-for-profit and it's wholly volunteer-based running it.

๐Where you will find me this month?
Ok, I'll be at home ๐ till at least May 18th (from latest government announcements), but I'll be giving a lightning talk at this month's PyLadies Dublin about my Maker project, "Print your own adventure game" with Raspberry Pi, thermal printer, arcade buttons and all controlled with Circuit Python. So I hope to see you at PyLadies Dublin on Tue May 19th at 18:30.

Big shout out to allthetechthings.com where we pulled information about Diversity/Grants and Call for Papers from around Europe.
Any enquiries (incl. CFPs, announcements, etc), you can drop me an email at contact@codinggrace.com.
Finally, we've only a couple of weeks till restrictions are slowly lifted and hopefully in time we will have more in-person events (ref: Irish Government's roadmap)
In the meantime, I hope everyone stay healthy and safe. #StayAtHome and #WashYourHands is ever so important right now, let's get through this together. ๐ท๐งผ
Thanks,
/// Vicky
