Coding Grace July 2020 Newsletter

Hope you are all well. Now we are in Phase 3 of re-opening the country, let's enjoy the rest of our summer while still keeping safe.
๐งตIf you want to make your own masks, do try and make one, even hand-stitching without need of sewing machine. It's worth it and level up on sewing skills is always good to have! I am still not scared of my sewing machine anymore from my past experience with it.
๐ Are you working on a project, share it with us, I'm happy to have you as a guest blog. Drop me an email at contact@codinggrace.com.
๐I'm keeping this here, as it's so important. Don't forget the volunteer groups who from took initiative from the first official announcement from the government about social isolation and call to action like Open Source Ventilator Project, the Covid-19 Cloth Face Masks for All Ireland Facebook group, and the 3D Printing Ireland Facebook group who are printing face shields for frontline health workers.

I spoke at a Berlin online conference called Enthusiasticon on Sat June 6th. It was a fantastic experience. All talks are 10 minutes long on different tech topics that are fun and exciting. I gave a high level overview of my Print your own adventure game (no code). I would recommend you speak next year, they are so welcoming, and nice long, proper lunch break. Pity I had packet losses during my talk, it took me a week to set up and I practiced loads as it was my first international talk!
๐Pic above is me practising my talk by recording myself on OBS and replaying recordings of myself to see if I'm looking at the camera, if I am within 10 minutes, etc. I've a white screen set up behind me. I was very nervous on the lead up to it (my talk was in the afternoon, the waiting for my turn was the worst). ๐ฐ๐ฆBut practicing really helped, and talk itself went well. ๐

๐ Your Support ๐
๐คWe are still interested in finding out what you are interesting in learning, especially now that we are indoors and would be a great opportunity to learn new skills.
๐คฒWe mentioned this in our newsletter last month. We want to try and make Coding Grace sustainable, our huge expense is our accountant each year. So we are trying out Open Collective and we are open to donations from individuals and corporates. We are not-for-profit and it's wholly volunteer-based running it.

#GoingFar Mentorship Programme
Shout out for Talita Holzer behind #GoingFar Mentorship is a beta programme for diverse migrant professionals living in Ireland, which will initially run for 3 months. They will match participants with experienced mentors based on their needs, who they will meet (in person or virtually) for 1 hour once a month for the duration of the programme.
They will launch this programme in August, when they will have a virtual kick-off for participants to meet their mentors and have their first mentoring session

๐Where am I this month?
Ok, I'll still be at home. But I'm embarking on making podcasts for two organisations, it's a new area for me, hopefully I'll be able to share in the next newsletter.
I'll be running virtual PyLadies Dublin meetup this month, it might be live-streamed (depending if things don't go wrong like last time ๐
). I'll also be attending to EuroPython 2020 Online conference this month, plus I'm on the comms team.
